The Dairy at Burghley details

The Dairy is comprised of two wings named Cecil Cottage and Exeter Cottage, making it ideal for a group of friends, family reunions and all manner of celebrations including wedding parties. Wherever possible, original features from the dairy have been kept and reused along with the introduction of some antique paintings, prints and furniture from the collections at Burghley House. Award-winning interior designer, Thomas Hamel, has created spectacular dining and living spaces enjoying open fires and wonderful views. Every room has the advantage of an en-suite bathroom with deep bath tubs and walk-in showers. There is space for your dogs and an enclosed garden.

The Dairy is within walking distance of Burghley House which offers a full calendar of events and facilities. These include concerts, country fairs and food markets, car rallies, the Burghley Film festival and the world class Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The Orangery Restaurant, is open most days from mid-January to Christmas and while the park around the House is accessible all year during daylight hours, the House and Gardens can be enjoyed from mid-March until November. Guests at the Dairy will have privileged access through the park and be able to walk down the 18th Century drive known as ‘Capability’s Cutting’ to the beautiful Lion Bridge and across the lake, one of Brown’s most iconic landscape features.

Attractions and nearby amenities

  • Burghley is one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in England. Whilst still a family home, the House is open to the public from March to October. Burghley also hosts the Garden of Surprises, a modern oasis of flowing water and fountains perfect for children to splash in, and the Contemporary Sculpture Garden which mixes beautiful landscape gardens with innovative sculptures.
  • Stamford is just over a mile from the Dairy, a beautiful and historic market town, popularly voted one of the top places to live in the UK. Stamford is a thriving place, with numerous independent and high quality restaurants and shops and a bustling market on Fridays.
  • Plenty of entertainment is available at the Arts Centre. Built in 1768, it is one of the oldest provincial theatres in England and hosts many events throughout the year, from films and stand-up comedy, to willow weaving workshops.
  • Slightly further afield, Rutland Water, 10 miles to the west, is one of Europe’s largest reservoirs and is now a haven for fishing, cycling, sailing and wildlife, and rolling countryside with picturesque villages all round.
  • Burghley is within Hidden England, a treasure trove of great family days out and activities, combined with some of England’s most stunning heritage sites, including Belvoir Castle, Peterborough Cathedral, Grimsthorpe Castle, Rockingham Castle and Easton Walled Gardens.
  • Guests enjoying a weekend booking have free complimentary membership to Burghley Park Golf Club, which came into being in 1890 and has since developed into one of the most pleasing and enjoyable parkland courses in the country. The facilities include an 18 hole traditional parkland golf course, a driving range, and clubhouse with restaurant and bar.
  • The Dairy is situated within the Burghley Park a short stroll from Burghley House and on the edge of Stamford in Lincolnshire, just 20 minutes north of Peterborough on the A1. Regular train services run from London King’s Cross to Peterborough and take a little over 50 minutes.
