Lexington House holiday home details

This superbly restored property is as stunning as its location. Lexington House puts you right next to one of the most iconic lakes of the Lake District, not to mention the bustling village of Bowness-on-Windermere, with its shops and restaurants. Yet behind the front door is a haven of tranquillity, with large chesterfield sofas to relax into and lots of home comforts like a wood-burning stove. The slate top dining table set into the bay window is a particularly unique and attractive feature.

There’s impressive attention to detail throughout, with a parquet floor in the living room, Egyptian cotton linen in the bedrooms and en-suites for every bedroom. The zip and link bed in the super king size bedroom can be converted to twin beds, just ask before your stay.

To the rear of the property is a secluded large patio, with comfortable outdoor furniture and a feature fireplace. It’s the perfect spot to rest those legs after a day spent exploring the lakeside paths and hillside walks of this beautiful part of the country.

Attractions and nearby amenities

  • Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the Lake District’s most popular towns, and it’s easy to see why. There’s so much to do here, much of it water-related, with boats for hire and watersports to try. People also come here to sign up to outdoor activities and walks, and there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to keep you occupied all day.
  • While you’re visiting you might want to take a lake cruise and get a different view of Windermere. The ferries take you to Ambleside and Lakeside. If you hop off at Ambleside, you can take a horse-drawn carriage to Waterhead Pier, or take a short walk to see Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular waterfall.
  • Or take the ferry across the lake and then amble the ‘West Shore Walk’, a gentle stroll along the shoreline. For something more strenuous, you could choose to walk the 2.5 miles or so from Windermere Hotel to Orrest Head, one of the guidebook author Alfred Wainwright’s favourite walks.
  • Built in the late 1800s, Blackwell is a large house that’s designed in the Arts and Crafts style. The interior decoration is as beautiful as the setting, with original decorative features throughout, and there are often events, plays and concerts here too.
  • One of the people who helped made the Lake District famous is the poet William Wordsworth. You can visit his childhood home in Cockermouth, but his house Dove Cottage in Grasmere is even more evocative of the poet’s life. He lived here with his sister Dorothy for nearly ten years.
  • Another famous native of the Lake District is Beatrix Potter. You can visit her former farmhouse, Hill Top, in Near Sawrey simply by taking the ferry across Lake Windermere. There are some beautiful original artworks from her books on display.
