Todd Hills Hall Farmhouse & Vale Croft holiday home details

Photographs of Vale Croft coming soon!

With the Pennines on one side and the Lake District on the other, Todd Hills Hall Farmhouse and Vale Croft are a walker’s delight. The traditional farm house and cottage are set within the Rowley Estates farmland, so there are fields and superb views on every side.

The owners have furnished the farm house to an extremely high standard, with six en-suite bedrooms, two wood burning stoves and an Aga as well as a side-by-side fridge in the kitchen. The dining room table even converts to a half size snooker table, so you can all enjoy an evening or two polishing up your potting skills.

Vale Croft was built in original local sandstone, the retreat floods with light by day and shields you from the elements by night. An open plan living area offers a sandstone fireplace with wood burner at one end, a dining area in the centre and a fully equipped kitchen at the other. There’s underfloor heating and oak ledged and braced doors throughout, high ceilings and breathtaking views.

Melmerby is a small village which has a lovely little village post office tea room shop, a great and reasonably priced antique shop and The Old Village Bakery which serves breakfasts, lunches, coffees, homemade bread and cakes and has a lovely interior, ladies fashion and gift shop. There is also a wonderful village pub called The Shepherd's Inn which is very welcoming and serves delicious food. All these are within a short walk from the farmhouse and cottage.

Adjoining Todd Hills Hall Farmhouse and Vale Croft is Gill Beck Barn (sleeping 6 guests). These properties can be booked individually or together to sleep 20 guests.

Attractions and nearby amenities

  • Long Meg is a famous local inhabitant you should meet while you’re here. She’s twelve feet tall and a dark grey colour. Yes, she’s a stone, standing proud with another 69 of her ‘daughters’ in a stone circle just outside Little Salkeld. Apparently, it’s impossible to count the same number of stones twice. See if you can.
  • The evocative and dramatic ruins of Lowther Castle are a unique day out. The castle originally had one room for every day of the year, but in 1957, its interiors were brought crashing down, leaving an intriguing and eerie skeleton. The gardens are well worth exploring, and there’s an excellent adventure playground here too.
  • The Cumbrian writer Hunter Davies said that Ullswater was more like a river than a lake, stretching for miles along the eastern edge of the Lake District. See if you agree with him by taking a Steamer cruise from one end to the other. You can embark at Pooley Bridge at the top of the lake.
  • You’re in border country here in the Eden Valley, and Brougham Castle is evidence of the disputes and battles that have taken place here. This picturesque ruin still has plenty of long corridors and spiral staircases to explore, with splendid views from the battlements.
  • Just a couple of miles away from Brougham is the border town of Penrith, where you can visit another ruined castle as well as potter about the local shops. If you’re lucky enough to be here at the right time, one truly unique event is Penrith Goes Orange, when the whole town er… goes orange. You have to be there really.
  • Stretching 73 miles, Hadrian’s Wall marked the northern frontier of the Roman empire. Now, 2,000 years later, it’s still a fascinating day out. You can explore ruined forts, learn about Roman life in the museums or simply stroll along the path next to the wall. One of the best places to see the remains of the wall is Birdoswald, to the north of Todd Hills Hall.
  • There are some great country pubs for dining such as The Fetherston Arms and The Crown which are a short journey away in Kirkoswald.
