Merry Hill Barn holiday home details

It’s not often you get the chance to stay in a movie location. Merry Hill Barn featured in the 2015 movie “Far From the Madding Crowd”, based on Thomas Hardy’s novel of the same name. It’s been completely refurbished since then, with lots of modern comforts and amenities, such as Bosch appliances in the kitchen and a 65” flat screen Freesat television in the sitting room. There’s still a sense of the original country dwelling though, with exposed stone walls and original beams, however Merry Hill Barn cleverly combines comfort, traditional features and modern style and with cosy underfloor heating throughout.

The barn conversion offers ‘upside-down’ living with three large bedrooms on the ground floor, and the sitting room and kitchen area reached via a beautiful oak staircase. The sitting room has a contemporary living flame wall-hung fire, and the kitchen boasts Minerva work tops as well as a large American fridge/freezer. There is seating for six guests at the dining table plus three bar stools for relaxed seating at the kitchen island. All the bathrooms have sensor lighting and fluffy Egyptian cotton bath sheets. The hallway downstairs has patio doors which open out onto the lawned garden, fully enclosed with a stone wall and five bar gate, and with the beautiful Dorset landscape beyond. Just across the fields are a pub, farm shop and café, and within easy reach are the pretty Dorset villages of Portesham, Abbotsbury and Langton Herring.

  • Weymouth is an attractive seaside town with Georgian buildings lining the harbour. If you’re bringing the little ones, Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park gives them the chance to be a pirate or a mermaid for the day, while they learn about the magical creatures off the southern coast.
  • Speaking of the coast, you’re never far away from the sea at Merry Hill Barn. The Jurassic Coast is world-famous as one of the best places to find fossils and evidence of the prehistoric past. There are plenty of fascinating finds on display at the Lyme Regis Museum.
  • If you’d like to add some adrenaline to your experience of the great outdoors, coasteering is guaranteed to get the heart pumping. Climb up rocks and cliffs and then jump into the water below. Guides at Lulworth Outdoors know the best places to explore.
  • Also nearby is the Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock with its café, serving fresh local seafood and home made cakes.
  • Further west is the bustling market town of Bridport and the colourful, pretty town of Lyme Regis, with gentle waters for bathing, ideal for children.
  • The county town of Dorchester is only a 20 minute drive away with its large selection of shops, restaurants, cafes, museums and two cinemas.
