Splendid. Delightful. Marvellous.
We loved Scargill Castle.
We’ve stayed at some ‘posh castles’ Thornbury, Langley & Obidos (Portugal) but Scargill is the best. The perfect surprise birthday treat for Sue.

What can we say but Absolutely Fantastic! Welcoming basket etc. was lovely. Thank you so much. Castle is a delight, very quirky with some surprises that made it a more authentic medieval experience. Candles & bottle of wine made a treat that evening. A beautiful and tranquil place with lovely walks, and for our last evening the Tudor Banquet, and it certainly was delicious, lush and extremely filling, with lots to take on our journey back home.
Thank you again for a wonderful experience.

This was our first visit and it won’t be our last! We loved Scargill Castle revelling in its history and comfort. (Recommend you watch the Time Team DVD archaeological dig with Tony Robinson).
It was scorching hot all week, so we didn’t do half of what we planned. It was too hot for us and our Border Collies. Never mind…next time.
The garden with its different seating areas more than compensated and gave sun traps and shade...
We enjoyed the Tudor Banquet and would highly recommend it. It lasted us ages.
Caroline & Niall thanks for sharing your wedding present.

A really fabulous stay, quiet, peaceful, in fact quite heavenly. The Tudor banquet was the icing on the cake – a feast for the eye as well as the palate.

The most amazing place to spend a surprise birthday weekend arranged by my wonderful husband. The castle is a spectacle to behold & truly cosy and containing. The views from the banqueting table across the rolling countryside are truly beautiful. The décor and styling of Scargill Castle is simply lovely. The bed is comfy & cosy too.

We feel absolutely privileged to have spent our honeymoon in the unique and fascinating Scargill Castle...A huge thank you and round of applause to Caroline and Niall for restoring such a wonderful property and allowing others to appreciate it in all its glory. Without a doubt in our minds we will definitely be returning in the future to this very special place.

Everything was perfect on arrival thanks to Kath and Caroline and it carried on being a perfect weekend beginning with drinks and nibbles with friends, a cosy Saturday in front of the log burner and the sun shone brightly all day Sunday to welcome the family for a birthday picnic in the beautiful garden. All in all a perfectly wonderful weekend in a perfectly wonderful Scargill castle.

We've had such a relaxing break with our Beagle Harvey! The attention to detail and all the romantic touches were lovely. Fabulous sense of history combined with stunning uninterrupted views. Thank you to Kath for preparing the castle to such a high standard for our arrival!

We had a wonderful romantic holiday in the middle of nowhere. The Tudor feast was delicious and we loved sitting in the courtyard with a morning cuppa. Places worth visiting are Richmond for arts and crafts where we spent a small fortune, Reeth for the scenic drive and both human and dog friendly pubs and artistic community and also Durham with its breath-taking Cathedral. We are saving our pennies to come back again.

Lovely three days treat. Weather was fantastic; dramatic, sunny, misty, thundery, windy, wet, dry and dismal! England in August! The castle is great; really interesting and atmospheric! We liked the champagne, and our dog her treats. It is a lovely and well restored gem. Thanks so much.

Three days well spent celebrating my other half's birthday who has always wanted to have his own castle so felt like a king for the weekend. It’s going to be difficult to make him abdicate and give up his throne…a fabulous place with great atmosphere. Thank you to Kath and Caroline for making everything perfect on our arrival. Really hope to be back soon!

It was a special week for a special occasion - to celebrate my 50th birthday. The Castle really lived up to our expectations. It was a great location with such tranquillity. Having spent 3 days relaxing we are sad to say goodbye but thank you for a lovely experience.

Scargill Castle is a singular place in a very beautiful location. We enjoyed the unusual nature of the building; a gatehouse from a long-demolished 'border' stronghold, and particularly the manner in which it's restoration has not been overdone or over-themed. The simple decoration enhances the surviving historic stonework and woodwork, while the careful choice of furniture gives it comfort and 'history' without making the whole experience a pastiche. It is a place we could live in, rather than obviously a holiday home. The welcome pack was ... most welcome! A lovely, kind idea which makes a difference to arriving somewhere after a very long journey (Kent) - and the local produce it contained was delicious! All in all, we had a memorable few days here.

Wow, what an amazing place! Wonderful birthday weekend. Dowagers Delight was excellent and we particularly enjoyed the "Tudor Music to Feast to" and inflatable crown (although we had, of course, brought our own, merely as a precaution!) Intended to eat out for the second and third nights but decided against it as this is just such a fantastic place to soak up the atmosphere. I'm sure we'll be back. Thank you.

We have spent 3 fantastic days and nights at Scargill Castle, celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. Nothing had quite prepared us for the sheer beauty and tranquillity of this very special place and we feel 'transported' in to the past. You are to be congratulated on preserving this beautiful piece of history for future generations to enjoy - well done Caroline and Niall! We must also add our thanks to Rachel for her fantastic 'Dowagers Delight' supper and to your housekeeping staff for such immaculate presentation. Thank you also for the very lovely welcome hamper and your superb information file.

We can from Boston in the USA, via Puglia, Italy and further south from London and Cambridgeshire in England. A magical stay. We had four days of fine weather. We explored the coast - as far away as Seaham and then more local haunts - from a challenging bike ride along Beck's creek and the Greta River, to the Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle - with Eggleston Abbey a stop along the way. But always the highlight was 'coming home' to Scargill Castle. The comforts provided - from luxurious bath robes to delicious marmalade. The cosy fires in the living room and equally cosy duvet in the bedroom. And above all, the sense of enjoying history, while being relieved of any of its discomforts! Along with feeling part of the rhythms of life here in the dales. So much gratitude to you, Caroline and Niall for your vision and commitment - and for sharing it with the rest of us - we carry precious memories home with us.

What a beautiful place. The views! The castle! The attention to detail like tulips in the bedroom, and daffodils in vases were really appreciated. I was impressed with the cooking equipment as I cooked each evening and we ate in style at the banqueting table. Thank you for this time.

Scargill Castle has more than lived up to our high expectations - even the magazines were up to date! As an avid reader of local newspapers, it was a delightful surprise to see the Teesdale Mercury in the very tasty and useful hamper. Having struggled to light several wood burners at holiday cottages , we were amazed how soon we were enjoying a roaring fire.

What a fantastic setting for our honeymoon. The welcome basket of goodies was fantastic and the banquet just divine! For a couple who love 'quirky' this was just perfect. Warm, cosy with wine and champers flowing copiously - and the bath! Fantastic.
Thank you so much for providing us with a magical start to our life together.

A lovely place to spend Valentines weekend ... romantic, peaceful, lovely atmosphere . The 'hamper' was a lovely touch and very much appreciated. Highly recommend the food at the Rose & Crown - fabulous. Everyone should pay a visit to the Milbank pub and Neil ... an experience never to be forgotten. We've had a much needed relaxing break in Scargill Castle and unfortunately now have to go home. The castle is a credit to you both!

Had a lovely few days at Scargill Castle. Weather was bright and rather cold - we were very lucky considering the snow a couple of weeks before. C's favourite was the 'all singing and all dancing' power shower.

Scargill Castle was everything we wanted it to be and more. The 'extra' thoughtful touches were very much appreciated. The castle was our protection against the roaring winds that circled most nights. We sat happily though, in front of the welcoming log burner with tudor music in the background whilst reading from the array of books on the shelf. We really enjoyed the tudor banquet that Rachel made for us on New Year's Eve and brought the New Year in wearing the very important crowns, we did indeed feel like a King and Queen of Scargill Castle. We've enjoyed walking in the area and have seen some beautiful landscapes. Back to Derbyshire now and return to the routines of life but we will never forget our week of escapism in a wonderful place called Scargill Castle. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making it a very special place.

1 February 2013
We looked for somewhere special, romantic and rural to celebrate our anniversary and we were not disappointed. What an amazing place! We arrived when the ground was lightly dusted with snow and the landscape was absolutely breath taking. The personal touches left for us were truly heart warming and welcome as was the generous hamper and treats in the fridge. We enjoyed immensley, the Tudor Banquet. Who would have thought the Tudors would have so much flavour - they could rival with Masterchef. A wonderful experience to add to the whole experience. We relaxed with walks and just taking in all the beauty of Scargill and its surroundings. In the evenings we went to Lumley Castle which was amazing, albeit a little further than anticipated, but well worth the 45-minute drive. The path to Hawksworth is through the gates in front of the cottages, well worth the walk and the snow added to the beauty of the hills, wolds and streams. Thank you for sharing this amazing place. We've had a lovely relaxing time here and done basically nothing but chill. The dog, Kana found her spot on the mat at the front door (with the under floor heating) and spent most of her time there. Great place, nice area and nice duvets too. Fantastic weather for once. SN, Lancashire

We've had a lovely, relaxing stay here. What you have achieved is really impressive and I have enjoyed looking through the articles and photos to see how the place has changed. We came here to relax in front of the fire with a book - well kindle and we've done just that, with the occasional walk out with our dog. He was very happy with his treats - thank you, and we were very happy with ours too - it really made our stay extra special. Hope we can come back again soon. LN, Cheshire

It is such a tranquil and peaceful place to stay, we feel privileged to have shared it and the wonderful atmopshere of such a historical building. Thank you for all the little touches, the flowers in every room and for giving us a sense of being cherished and cared for. We would love to return. JR, Leeds.

One word - WOW! When we pulled up outside and I saw where we were staying, I was godsmacked.... then I came inside and it amazed me even more, everything about this place is amazing, the location, the view, the decor. I could go on but anyone else who comes here will know what I mean. This was meant to be a surprise weekend for my birthday, little did I know an even bigger surprise awaited me, a proposal (and it really was, he was very sneaky! Plus its been 14 years, so I'd given up on it ever happening). We've done a couple of walks while we've been here - Low force and the small one in the folder and they were both delightful. Visited High force very nice and the bengal merchant in Barnard Castle which was recommended. Thanks to the owners, it has truly been wonderful and we will definitely come back. JS, Wakefield

We came here when it had been raining heavily for 24 hours. Once inside the Castle it has a different world. I have been to many Rural Retreat sites, the Castle is probably the most beautifully restored of them all, a treasure. Visited Durham, Whitby, Hamsterley forest (great for mountain biking). But all the weekends the most enjoyable feeling was sitting in front of a log fire in a cheristic building. PS, Liverpool
