Attractions and nearby amenities

  • Whatever you’re hoping to find in a city, you’ll find it in York. Roman ruins, fascinating history, and great places to eat, drink and shop. York Minster is one of the architectural jewels of the UK, the Jorvik Viking Museum is a must and there are 29 other museums to explore here too.
  • To focus on just one of those other museums, The National Railway Museum is the nation’s largest railway collection, with some fascinating and iconic exhibits showing the history of the railway. From Stevenson’s Rocket to the Mallard, it’s all here.
  • Fifteen miles north of York is Castle Howard, one of the country’s finest stately homes, with 1,000 acres of rolling parkland. If you’ve come away with little ones, they’re bound to enjoy Geoffrey the Lion’s illustrated trail through the house.
  • Rievaulx Abbey is an evocative ruin standing proud on the North York Moors. A wander through the ruins is a fascinating and enjoyable day out, and you can pick up an audio tour to learn more about what it was like to be a medieval monk!
  • Overlooking the River Ouse, Beningbrough Hall is a Georgian mansion with superb carvings and interiors, including a central corridor that runs the full length of the house. There are regular art exhibitions held here too.
  • If you enjoy visiting historic places, the Eden Camp near Malton is a unique museum that has to be seen to be believed. Twenty-nine Nissan huts, crammed full of artefacts and exhibits from the Second World War. The camp takes you events chronologically, and you’ll get a real feel for life during the war and the early 1940’s.
  • Visit the town of Pickering and you could find yourself travelling back in time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The scenery is breathtaking, and there are 24 miles of it to enjoy.
