County of Dumfries Holiday Cottages

County of Dumfries Holiday Cottages The County of Dumfries is a beautiful destination for a country holiday escape and that is, in part, due to all the amazing historical aspects of the area. With castles dating back to the medieval era, and forbidding island fortresses from the 14th Century, there's a whole host of Scottish history to discover when you visit.

Exciting castles to put on your list of places to visit should include Caerlaverock Castle; one of Scotland's great medieval fortresses, Drumlanrig Castle; one of Britain's grandest castles, and Threave Castle; a medieval island fortress and stronghold for the Black Douglases built by Archibald the Grim. Drumlanrig Castle is additionally a fantastic place to visit with children as there are a number of interactive and exciting activities to engage with the history and the surrounding countryside.

Another wonderful historical site to visit during your time in the County of Dumfries is the Sweetheart Abbey, or Dulce Cor, which was founded by Lady Dervorgilla in tribute to her beloved husband, John Balliol.

If ancient buildings aren't the kind of history you're looking for, there's still a lot for you to see. The Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum is a great day out for all the family and the Museum of Lead Mining is very historic. For more modern history, the County of Dumfries is also home to the David Coulthard Museum, created to celebrate the renowned Scottish Formula 1 driver.

For those more outdoorsy types, there are some fantastic destinations to explore in and around the beautiful countryside landscape. The Crawick Multiverse is a fascinating land art exhibition, utilising landscape art to transform a former open cast coal mine. The Galloway Forest Park and Criffel Hill will provide some exploratory walks through the beauty of nature, and the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall is a sight to behold. One final piece of history though, out in nature, is the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle, the 7th largest stone circle in Britain and largest in mainland Scotland.

However you choose to relax or explore in the County of Dumfries, with our beautiful cottages, you'll always be able to have somewhere to come back to of an evening and take respite in the peace of your surroundings.
