Old Purves Hall holiday home details

Old Purves Hall is a magnificent and spacious retreat that is the perfect holiday base for larger groups. From the oak beamed drawing room to the well-appointed kitchen with its central island and long dining table, the whole property has been expertly designed and furnished to create a very special holiday home. A fine, characterful staircase rises to the six large and luxurious bedrooms above.

Touches of period detail abound, such as the studded oak doors that open onto the inner hallway or the cosy inglenook fireplace in the drawing room. Guests’ comfort has been considered in every detail, such as the underfloor heating in the boot room to help you and any four-legged friends dry off after a walk, or the tasteful fabrics and artworks throughout the property.

The walled garden boasts a fire pit and gas barbecue, along with a converted stable that now functions as a games room. With three acres of woodland to explore, you could spend a day or two without stepping off the property, but there are plenty of landmarks and attractions in the nearby vicinity to tempt you, including country pursuits such as hunting and fishing as well as the spectacular heritage coast. One final selling point, the owners offer the chance to book a private cook and can arrange a wine delivery to your door too.

Attractions and nearby amenities

  • There are plenty of excellent walks in the glorious countryside around Old Purves Hall. The nearest village, Greenlaw is a five minutes drive where you can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink at the local pub. A little further afield is the market town of Kelso. You’ll find the largest cobbled town square in Scotland, as well as plenty of independent and traditional shops to explore.
  • The nearby town of Duns is home to the Jim Clark Museum, a unique centre that’s devoted to the life of the Formula 1 champion racing driver. The hill of Duns Law is also worth a trek, rewarding you with views of the farmland stretching out to the coast.
  • Old Purves Hall is in prime location for sporting bird shooting, with grouse, pheasant and partridge shoots nearby. If you prefer fishing, the Whiteadder River is a tributary of the Tweed and offers good runs of salmon and sea trout. Autumn is the best time to catch migrating fish, and there are six beats in the vicinity.
  • The Lammermuir Hills are gentle and undulating, yet feel remote and isolated from the towns of the coast. You’ll find excellent walks here and the cliff scenery to the west is spectacular. If you prefer travelling on two wheels, the Borderloop is a 250-mile circular route, while Greenlaw Moor offers a choice of off-road tracks.
  • At the foot of the Lammermuir Hills is Duns Golf Club, feted as one of the best in southern Scotland.
  • Just half an hour’s drive from Old Purves Hall is the beautiful heritage coastline of Northumberland and the Borders, with a number of beautiful landmarks including Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island.
  • There are many castles closer to Old Purves Hall, including Thirlestane, a magnificent 16th century castle that has been home to the Maitland family since 1590.
