Everything from our welcome, the excellent hamper, the quality and comfort of the accomodation was excellent, So much care had been taken to make it all an ideal retreat it was a real pleasure to stay in the cottage. We were terribly sad to leave it.

Lovely cottage. Perfect for two people. Exceptionally clean and the owners were lovely people. Anne's cakes are amazing. The area is so beautiful great for walking or just sightseeing. The village has two pubs/eateries both in the Michelin guide and one with a star and there is also a lovely pub 2 miles away. The market town of Helmsley is also 2 miles away and is well worth a visit

The property was beautiful and just what we anticipated. Exceptionally clean and very well furnished and equipped. The owners were very welcoming and nearby if you needed anything. Also the Welcome pack was just right with quality items and some local bread and cheeses, I'm a convert to Yorkshire Blue.

Excellent quality conversion in a lovely garden. Good location in a pleasant village. Super 'hamper' on arrival and on site hosts very pleasant and helpful.

The kitchen and bedroom areas were fine but the lounge area only has skylight windows, so no views out.

The house was small (perfect for 2) but had everything we could possibly want and was beautifully designed and decorated. Phil and Anne, the owners were very friendly and helpful. The freshly baked cakes on arrival were a special treat!

Still no appliance instructions, I reported this last time we stayed. TV is a mystery!
Parking not good, very difficult to reverse out especially when someone parks right at the entrance of the parking space for the cottage which seems to be all the time.

Very good comfortable accommodation which was just enough for 2 people and our little dog.
Generally well equipped, but small saucepan (or small set of saucepans) for at least boiling eggs would have been useful.
The welcome hamper was excellent with a very comprehensive selection of goods to get us through the initial days.
TV coverage via use of the internet TV arrangement was not very good.

The location was good a nice village. The cottage although was only for two people I found the kitchen area was on the small side the lounge was ok as was the bathroom but my main concern was the bedroom. Lack of hanging space we only had coat hooks no wardrobe which I was expecting. Also the hoover was in the room as were other cleaning items so this was not up to rural retreats standards. We have stayed in other rural retreats befor and hopefully we will stay again.

home from home. absolutely gorgeous. just needs some drawers in the single bedroom and maybe a coffee table or some small end tables for drinks, maybe a side light for softer mood lighting as over head lights give me a headache. luxury 5*. truly loved it. the drive in is poor though and needs a sign.

Didn't really see the housekeeper so felt it lacked the personal touch and the garden was not checked as dog poo was left by previous occupier.
Other than that excellent, clean and spacious accommodation in a beautiful rural location. So close to 5 stars!

The property itself was excellent. Clean, beautifully spacious and in full working order. A really lovely property. We were a little surprised at how close the property is to the owners home. The property has large, bi-fold doors which are fantastic but actually the property looks into the owners property. This didn't spoil our holiday at all but we didn't get any feeling of the position of the property from the property details.

Certainly not up to the standard expected of a Rural Retreats property and not worth nearly £500 for two nights there in December. The kitchen floor is filthy all over, but is especially bad near the cooker and sink: it looks like very old grease that has become black with dirt over time. It was freezing in the kitchen and the downstairs toilet, which didn't have a light bulb that worked. Two sections of the toaster didn't work. The bedrooms were very warm (there are storage heaters upstairs) and the beds comfortable. Both had good ensuites (one with a bath, the other with a shower).

The owner of the cottage would have visited during your stay to rectify them had they been made aware. They have replaced the toaster and the light bulb and cleaned the kitchen floor. Water pressure terrible- not great for our guests in the twin room especially. A pump really is needed! Sadly we won't be returning as always look for a dog friendly cottage.
The cottage was well equipped and very cosy with the woodburner.

A little note from the owner: We are pleased that you found the cottage well equipped and cosy, but sorry you felt the water pressure was unacceptable. Maintaining the character of a country cottage while meeting modern-day demands is always a balancing act. The water flow to all the sinks is normal, the hand-held shower is adequate and a decent bath takes ten minutes or more to run, which may not suit everyone. The water flow in the kitchen has been vastly improved. This cottage is having a trial without dogs but I am sure Rural Retreats look forward to welcoming you to one of their dog-friendly properties in the future.

Heather Cottage is a well equipped holiday cottage and was clean and comfortable. However.......the hot water supply to the rear ensuite bath, the front ensuite shower and the kitchen sink was nothing less than disgraceful. It took 20 minutes to run 1" (yes....one inch) of hot water in the bath. Considering the price we paid for this cottage for the weekend I would not book this property again until assured that this problem has been fixed. This is unacceptable and from a previous comment in the visitor book, this problem has been highlighted before....and clearly not addressed. It is not unreasonable to expect a hot bath/shower in November.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Heather Cottage. We are sorry to learn the issues you were having with the hot water. I have been in touch with the owner and she explained that the tap in the middle of the bath has to be on the correct setting fully (ie. shower/bath) and then the hot water flow will work as normal. This has been tested this morning by the owner. Regarding the pressure, the owner is looking into options to improve the hot water flow to the kitchen and is also considering fitting in a pump but noise could be an issue. It is a pity that you didn't contact the housekeeper during your stay as this issue could have been resolved.

We had a fabulous time at the Librarian's Cottage! It was so charming and the little village delightful. We so appreciated how well stocked it was; the hamper was a welcome to some weary travelers as were the lovely the toiletries. I hope we can return for a longer stay at some point. We did not get to see all of that lovely area or spend nearly enough time enjoying the beautiful Castle Howard.

Some safety issues here. Low beams, I banged my head twice, as did our son. Anyone above 5ft 8in would have a problem. After a week you develop a permanent stoop.

Very comfortable and generally well-equipped. But we would have liked a warning about the low beams given that one of us is 6' 3" and kept banging his head. We were also surprised there was no can opener, no water jug, no spare kitchen roll and not enough kindling and fire lighters for the logs that were provided.

Thank you for your review which we were very disappointed to read as all our other guests have loved Librarian's Cottage.  The parking spaces at the back of the property are shared with the neighbours however the garden is very much Librarians.  The second bedroom now has a 5' zip and link bed which can convert to two single beds.

Whilst it was a lovely cottage we thought some of the kitchen facilities were rather basic.

The Lighthouse cottage is a fabulous location - did not disappoint at all for that 'different' cottage location. Breathtaking views and peace and quiet.
The cottage itself is also very well equipped and decorated.

Absolutely wonderful! Appart from its stunning location, we were welcomed with an amazing hamper (which was not expected!), beautiful decor and the whole cottage was spotless. The housekeeper was very friendly and helpful. In fact the only problem was that I couldn't stay a lot longer! We'll definately be visiting again. Thank you.

Wonderful location.
Some small niggles, the shower in the shower room was never more than tepid. Could have done with more cutlery etc as had to wash up ( or put on a not full dish washer) too often.

The directions to the house were not very clear because the signs that mark the turning down to the property have changed. The key safe was a bit awkward at first, but after that everything was fine. We had a great time in a very comfortable, beatifullly situated place.

We had a lovely stay, it was comfortable, relaxing and well equipped for our needs. Views are amazing and great for walking on the cliff tops into Whitby. Dogs are welcome, which is a bonus.

We enjoyed our holiday very much as it is always a special experience to stay in a lighthouse cottage. However, we feel that the garden of the property should be securely enclosed for dogs as there is currently a passage way from the parking area to the garden which does not have a gate. Given the proximity of the cottage to very steep cliffs, this means that it is dangerous to let ones dog off the lead in the garden, which is a great pity.

We also feel that there should be a sign for the cottages on the lane leading off Hawsker Lane as we got quite lost looking for it on our day of arrival. We ended up going a long way down the wrong lane which turned out to be a farm track full of pot holes without easy turning places. In fact, at one point we thought that our car was going to get stuck in the deep mud.

On a minor note, one of the bulbs in the kitchen lights was not functioning and we couldn't find a bulb to replace it with.

I loved the house - what is there not to love? The high cliff-top position, the comfortable house, the stunning views out over the sea, the fresh air, the quiet... and a lighthouse.
Everything was clean and lovely when we arrived, there was a good selection in the welcome hamper, everything worked well.
I often don't want to leave when we stay at Rural Retreats properties and this was no different - I could have stayed there ... I was going to say forever and yes, I could have moved in.

Cottages and grounds were stunning. However, the garden furniture was of unacceptable standard, old and in need of repair or replacement and several of the chairs were unsafe/unusable. When you pay so much for a stunning outlook the outdoor furniture should be of a high standard. This needs rectifying urgently.

Nice cottage, amazing location, great welcome hamper. However, tv had no satellite reception and was useless, dangerous loose patio slab and lots of broken patio chairs were disappointing given the high price.

The house, facilities and the environs, amenities, plus the welcome hamper were all wonderful. The owner of the property was also very helpful when contacted, but there were details that could have been improved, and these details reveal a degree of carelessness in house-keeping.
First of all, the most important piece of equipment in the house, the kettle, was not in good order. The hinge of the lid was broken, and the filter at the spout was missing. As a result, pieces of limescale that came off dropped directly into the drinks I made.
This brings me to the next and most important point about the kettle: limescale accumulation. The kettle was caked with a thick layer of limescale. Pieces as thick and of the same colour as eggshells fell into the drinks. The heating elements were completely covered with a greenish-blue layer. I had no choice but to use limescale remover (Oust). It took me three sachets and more than 1.5 hours since 7:30 a.m. on the second day before I could make breakfast, but the removal was still not 100% complete.

One curious point, in addition, was the absence of teabags. There was a bag of ground coffee in the hamper, which was of very good quality, and instant coffee was in a container in the cupboard, but tea was on a higher demand, and I was surprised that there was none in the hamper. There were some in the cupboard, which were not enough for four people for a whole week’s stay.
Salt and oil were also not available in the cupboards, either. I thought that basic condiments would have been provided (the impression I got from 5 previous holiday rentals, and also from the information given on the website, but I might be wrong). The village shop and the nearest Co-op shop only stocked large ones, which made it rather inconvenient to have to purchase these for only a few
days.
We found a few new potatoes in the cupboard, though, but there was no indication of how long they had been there.

We tried to keep the bathrooms as clean as possible, but unfortunately there were no toilet and bathroom cleaners.
The garden furniture, as noted by a previous guest on this page, looked precarious. Some reinforcement of even replacement might be necessary.

Other that these, I must stress that we had a blissful stay in the property.

The location and the furnishings of SPA COTTAGE were first class . The space inside and outside the cottage were again first class . We would highly recommend this facility and the surrounding countryside and villages . in the village itself there are a pub ,a hotel with great food, and adjacent to the cottage is a wonderful bakery /coffee shop.There is a local store with all provisions /newspapers/magazines.,
The only suggestion we would make is that the beautiful garden /courtyard of the SPA COTTAGE deserve better lawn furniture / umbrellas , etc. The current chairs and table are in very bad condition with several broken supports......really these need replacing /upgrading immediately .

The cottage was an absolute delight! The White House was delightful, blending historical cottage details with all the modern comforts. We found it extremely charming and comfortable; really a pleasure to "come home" to. The kitchen was very well-equipped with everything we needed for family meals and entertaining. We appreciated the wine and food items (fresh bread, butter, tea) provided at the beginning of our stay. The house felt very cosy while having ample room for us to host a large family group without feeling crowded. The house was very clean and well-maintained. The ducks on the pond next door were a treat to watch!

Some very minor suggestions to make things even better: more towels please; dishwasher bottom rack needs repair or else an explanation as to how to use it (we could not figure out how to make it hold plates etc); bathtub stopper needs to be fixed or replaced; fans in bathrooms upstairs can be annoying at night as they run for a long time after the light is turned off; living room windows appeared able to be opened but were stuck shut.

Really warm in October so never needed the the open fire in the kitchen! The village pub made us very welcome. Great location just off the Hull by-pass with easy access to city centre attractions, Beverley, the Wolds & the coast. Will definitely consider returning.

A beautiful and very comfortable cottage with lots of thoughtful extras, like the binoculars and telescope for watching the birds and wildlife, and kitchen timers for cooking. The hosts are lovely and very friendly and were keen to ensure we had a perfect stay. There was an amazing welcome hamper on arrival too. I would definitely recommend going!

Our stay at Riverside Farm Cottage was better than expected. We were worried about the location, but it exceeded our expectations. The countryside is so beautiful and there are great hikes and amazing villages everywhere. The house was super clean and well furnished. The beds were comfortable, the water pressure was great, the appliances are high end, and the sitting room is full of games, books, movies, and other vacation essentials. The gardens are full of wildlife. There are rabbits, wild grouse, pheasant, kingfisher and more. It is obvious that this home is a passion project for Trevor and Trish and not just an investment. They are super responsive and clearly care about their guest's comfort. My son left a postcard and they sent it to us! Amazing. We have rented vacation homes for 20 years and they are exactly what we hope for in a host and a home. We were 4 adults and 4 children. We had plenty of space. I would recommend this home to anyone and would rent this home again if we are fortunate enough to return. Thanks so much for a perfect stay.

The cottage was lovely and in an beautiful, idyllic setting - sheep and pheasants seen from the windows and back garden; on a curve in the River Dove; and a short walk from the lovely village of Kirbymoorside. Our hosts were wonderful people who were helpful in suggesting things to do in the immediate and more distant area. There was a generous welcome basket waiting for us as well as other thoughtful amenities including umbrellas. The house itself was perfect for us - we didn't want to leave! We will definitely plan to stay there again the next time we are in the area.

We were fortunate enough to book The Limes at two days’ notice. I can only say we were absolutely delighted. Everything about our stay there was excellent........even the weather obliged.
The house was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The hamper was more than generous. Though the location was somewhat remote we found everywhere we wished to visit was easily accessible. It was exactly the break we were looking for.

Such lovely soft furnishings that I actually checked out labels to see where I can buy similar. Easy access to York, Helmsley and Castle Howard. Out of 5 nights we ate three times at the Durham Ox in Crayke - superb steaks. Thank you to The Limes owners for sharing their beautiful house.

We had a fantastic time at hillside farm. The house is amazing inside with everything done to a very high standard. The location is very rural but only a short drive to Whitby and robin hoods bay. The view from the house which we enjoyed whist having tea outside of the rolling hills and the sea is stunning. Can't wait to return.

Not enough kitchen or toilet rolls, however that is only a small grumble. Overall the farmhouse is a lovely place to stay in a fabulous location. We had a great time, the children loved it. I would stay there again.

Hi, we had the most wonderful stay @ Hillside Farm, the house is stunning, scenery @ the house and surrounding area wonderful
the only negative which I do feel worth a mention is we pulled up at the farm @ 12noon and asked the housekeeper present if we could pop some meat into the fridge (I fully appreciate we were not due until 4pm), unfortunately her displeasure was clearly visible in her tone and mannerism, indeed she rolled her eyes at me. It took all of 4 minutes to go into the house , pop the meat into the fridge and leave by which time I think she realised she had been a little rude as she then tried to make pleasant conversation unfortunately her first impression did not make a good one......

Thank you for your lovely comments about Hillside Farm.  We are, however, extremely disappointed to read about the welcome that you received.  Knowing the housekeeper, as we do, we are absolutely certain that it would have been a complete misunderstanding and she was taken by surprise.  I am extremely sorry, though, that you were given a bad first impression.

Hillside farm was the perfect place for our extended family of 10 to spend four nights over the New Year period. The house was extremely comfortable and very well equipped with plenty of high quality furnishings, crockery and glasses etc. The beds were very comfortable again with high end bedding. Holly the housekeeper was very helpful with any questions or problems that arose. The location of Hillside farm is very rural with stunning views to Whitby and the sea and the access lanes are quite steep and narrow so need to be used with caution. Can highly recommend Hillside farm and would not hesitate to return.

It was a great family house, superb for entertaining! Very well presented and the initial hamper etc was most welcome.

Wonderful location and property - contained everything that was needed and more, in excellent style, comfort, space and ambience. Stunning views too.
Only quibble was that the downstairs bedroom did not have an opening external window/door which meant it was a little musty.
Also I recommend some highlight tape on the small step in to the back larder with the big fridge - couple of us (absent minded adults) tripped on that.
Great holiday tho', thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The location was fabulous with stunning views. Hillside Farm was a great property, well appointed and a great place for a family holiday. There were 10 in our group including 4 children but it had plenty of space so we wern't on top of each other. I would recommend it and hope to book it again.

Need to review arrival directions, no yellow road covering. Larger signage at gate would help. Cottage amazing but needs stair carpet looking at as fraying and worn which could prove dangerous

Extremely underwhelmed with the cleanliness of the property. Couldnt help but feel we were being fobbed off with the 'turn the wifi off and on' to get it to work (needless to say this did not work.) Also, the stay was not helped with an unwanted rodent taking up home in the attic, most nights we were kept awake with the noise above us. A note was left about this, and we atleast expected some form of apology- perhaps an email or phone call from the property owners!! Poor.

The cleanliness of the house was very poor, mould and mildew in the shower and utility room, overflowing litter bins, poor electrics, inadequate shower facilities and dangerous carpets on the stairs.

Very good, but not quite excellent, property. The ground floor bedroom and bathroom had a damp smell, probably due to poor ventilation. We enjoyed Whitby very much. The property is in a very good location and the view from the property is lovely.

The house was immaculate! Rooms were very comfortable and welcoming. Small problem with bathroom having carpet material on floor becoming wet from shower. This was difficult to avoid!

Fantastic location, didn't see the housekeepers which I much prefer but Holly made clear she was around if we needed anything. A fantastic holiday was had by all!

All you may want to consider is a warning re steep roads for access and egress. Not a problem for any of us but some may find their cars can't handle it.

Great cottage, nice and clean, lovely welcome hamper thank you.
Puzzled why the large bathroom has such a tiny shower cubicle for 8 people to use. The upstairs ensuite had no shower either (only a bath)which was not clear in advance and disappointed our guests. Overall I would recommend it.
