Foodies need no excuse to visit Shropshire at any time of year, but in the run-up to Christmas the county gets fully into the swing of things.
Ludlow, often referred to as the 'food capital' of Shropshire, is always a good bet for produce markets, but for Christmas it goes all out! The usual Sunday market turns festive from Sunday 22nd November onwards, and other small Christmas markets are taking place throughout December, in addition to the brilliant annual Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fayre. The famous fayre happens in the incredible setting of Ludlow Castle and this year's is being held on the 26th and 27th November. Over 100 stalls are spread throughout the stunning castle grounds, selling seasonal wares, food and drink, crafts, historical goods and unique gifts. Stalls (and exhibitors) are adorned in medieval finery; there's entertainment and music too, all transporting you back in time to the castle's heyday. Over the weekend enjoy the festivities, find the perfect, original gift, or indulge in a unique treat.
A number of National Trust properties in the area hold various events. Dudmaston Estate hosts its Christmas Fair on the 19th and 20th November, and offers everything from jewellery and crafts to festive food and drink at a range of stalls around the estate. There will be music, children's entertainment and a combination of both inside and outside stalls. You're sure to find all you need to suit even the most difficult person on your present list!

Perhaps one of the best known Christmas markets takes place in Bath. Famous for its culture and World Heritage status, each year this stunning Georgian city transforms its centre into a haven for festivities, with more than 170 stalls and traditional wooden chalets lining the streets between the stunning Bath Abbey and the iconic Roman Baths. The sounds of carols and smells of delicious hot food drift through the air while the market sells handmade gifts, beautiful crafts and decorations, toys, Christmassy snacks, hampers and much more – all that you could need for the festive season!
At just a short stroll from the Bath Spa train station, the market is quick and easy to reach. It's open right into the evening and you can treat yourself to samples of the copious food and drink as you stroll around under the stars. There are many lovely bars or restaurants around if you need to rest your legs, and why not try out the returning 'Bath on Ice'? The ice rink is situated in the beautiful Royal Victoria Park, close to the famous Royal Crescent and will have a café serving mulled wine and seasonal treats. This year the Bath Christmas market runs from the 24th November to the 11th December, don't miss out!

York always makes Christmas a fantastic occasion. This year the St. Nicholas Fair will be running from the 17th November to the 23rd December. This means a rolling programme of different stalls, little wooden huts and twinkling lights will be lining the atmospheric streets of this historic city. Hunt out traditional gifts, local produce, crafts, delicious goodies and stocking fillers. There's no excuse not to go! As well as this, there are a number of other events taking place in and around York during the festive season including Living North Christmas Fair, from 1st - 4th December at the Racecourse, and the Barley Hall Festive Medieval Market, an intimate market in the medieval townhouse on the 28th November.
Eighteenth century Castle Howard always looks spectacular for the festive season, don't miss the fantastic decorations and live music inside this majestic stately home. There are a number of Christmas days and events throughout November and December, and in the stable courtyard Christmas Markets run from 19th November to 23rd December, which are great for grabbing arty gifts and seasonal treats with stalls offering fresh produce and local crafts.

North Norfolk in the run-up to Christmas is a place of open countryside, a refreshing nip in the air and an abundance of festive cheer! Many of the little towns go all out with lights and decorations and craft markets. Burnham Market's Christmas event takes place on the 23rd November and truly marks the start of the festivities with the Christmas lights being switched on in the evening to illuminate the beautiful little town throughout the following festive season. There will be an ice rink on Fairstead Green, mulled wine and a fairground too. Meanwhile the annual Deepdale Christmas Market in nearby Burnham Deepdale takes place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th December. Friday 4th sees the Deepdale Street Food Festival with live entertainment and the whole long weekend will be hosting over 100 stalls of unique and independent traders as well as entertainment and activities. The shops and café at Dalegate Market shopping centre will be open throughout the weekend festival, offering a range of goodies.
One much anticipated event is that of Holkham Hall. Holkham is open to visitors for all kinds of events during the run-up to Christmas, and offers an array of entertainment including opera on the 10th and 11th December and a theatre production on the 3rd. Youngsters will love meeting Father Christmas during his visit to the grand saloon between 17th and 20th December.

The Winchester Christmas Market is very highly regarded. It takes place in an iconic location in front of the famous cathedral and there are a great many quality stalls offering high-end goodies. The market is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets with pretty wooden chalets to browse. Pick up some last minute decorations for your tree, try out some of the delicious seasonal produce or grab some presents. With the Cathedral as a backdrop and the little stalls surrounding an atmospheric, open-air ice rink the market attracts thousands of visitors. The exhibitors are hand picked for their interesting products, and everyone brings something unique to the event. You'll be able to enjoy fantastic craft stalls, try food and drink and admire the various trinkets. As the evening falls enjoy a cup of something warm and wander the stalls as they are illuminated by pretty lights. This year's market takes place between the 18th November to the 20th December.
Another great one in the area is Portsmouth Victorian Festival of Christmas which is taking place between the 25th November to the 27th November. Visitors will be able to explore the atmospheric Dickensian streets surrounding the dockyard where the market is taking place; a number of dressed-up Victorian characters and other entertainment will be wandering.

At the heart of Exeter city centre on the cathedral green, Exeter Christmas Market runs from 19th November to the 18th December. It offers an eclectic mix of all things festive with crafts and decorations, food and drink including speciality cheeses and meats and festive pastries, unique gift ideas, handmade goodies and lots more. More than 50 traders, both local and international, will be involved in the event which takes place around the iconic cathedral throughout the day and into the evening.
Other little events and markets will also be taking place in and around Devon in the build up to Christmas including local traders' smaller craft markets or, for something a little different, why not enjoy Santa-by-Steam? The South Devon Railway is hosting Father Christmas in his own grotto train that travels between Buckfastleigh and Littlehempston.

You could visit Cumbria at any time of year and be blown away by its beauty. But at Christmas time the quaint little villages are complimented by bustling streets and pretty lights. Kendal is hosting its usual 'Made in Cumbria' farmers' market, but over the holiday season it will have a festive twist. Friday 25th November and Friday 23rd December will see what is thought to be the oldest market in Cumbria return to the town with lots of local traders selling fresh, local produce and seasonal treats. Over in the Brewery Arts Centre the Kendal Christmas Craft Market is taking place from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th November. This is a great opportunity to by special gifts and meet the talented artists who have created them. Try not to miss out if you're in the area!
Penrith Winter Festival is happening between November 26th and December 24th. The annual festival promises to add sparkle and Christmas cheer to the town. It focusses on working with the town's businesses and community to support the locals, but also to encourage guests. There are all kinds of things taking place: The town Christmas lights will be switched on and illuminate the streets for the festival, there will be crafts and Christmas markets, independent shops and special events, workshops and entertainment. So everyone can find something they'll enjoy.

Kent hosts a brilliant selection of Christmas fun each year, from markets to festivals, historic re-enactments to carol singing and tours of famous land marks. Enjoy being situated right in the heart of all the fun and make the most of this stunning time of year.
Canterbury traditional Christmas Market is taking place from the 28th November to the 26th December. Much of the town centre is pedestrianised making it very enjoyable to wander the stalls set up in Whitefriars Square and a number of the top brand stores will also be participating. In Rochester the Dickensian Christmas Festival brings the streets to life on the 5th and 6th December with entertainment, songs and dance.
Kent has a fantastic selection of castles and historic buildings; to see them at Christmas time is a real treat! Many places put on special fairs and events like Leeds Castle's Christmas market on 3rd/4th, 10th/11th, 17th/18th, 22nd/23rd December. Hever Castle's 'ONCE UPON A CASTLE' is taking place most days between the 26th November and 24th December and at Penshurst Palace, between the 26th November and 23rd December, 'Father Christmas in Narnia' is a great one for youngsters.
