Smithycroft holiday home details

Situated in the village of Combe St Nicholas and nestling on the edge of the Blackdown Hills, Smithycroft puts you right at the heart of some of the South West’s most beautiful walking country. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty boasts wonderful, rolling scenery, with walks galore across the Somerset and Devon border.

The traditional thatched cottage feels as cosy as it looks, with an inglenook fire place in the living room and a breakfast room with French doors leading out onto the enclosed garden. The owners have refurbished the property to include little touches of luxury, like a roll top bath in the en-suite from the master bedroom, so you enjoy a traditional cottage with all mod cons too.

Whether you’re coming away for a family holiday or a romantic break, Smithycroft is the ideal base for exploring a fascinating part of the world. The Jurassic Coast and Lyme Regis are thirty minutes’ drive away, and the splendour of Cheddar Gorge is only a short distance too. When you’ve had your fill of walking and exploring, it’s time to come back to your very own country idyll and enjoy all the delights of a tranquil and beautiful hideaway.

Attractions and nearby amenities

  • Lyme Regis was the setting for the novel and movie The French Lieutenant’s Woman, and the town has kept its aura of romance, with the iconic Cobb stretching out to sea, the perfect place for a windswept walk. The town is also ideal for dinosaur fans, putting you in easy reach of the Jurassic Coast. You can even have a go at digging for your own fossils.
  • Cheddar Gorge is a spectacular landscape of limestone caves and cliffs. The caves are worth a visit, but what is equally impressive is simply taking a drive through the gorge itself. You’ll hold your breath as you drive through the awesome scenery.
  • Whether you’re a novice at riding or an old pro, Drakes Farm Riding Centre is a short drive from Smithycroft. The stables cater for all ages and all levels. Why not book a lesson while you’re here?
  • From King Arthur to ley lines, the South West is steeped in myths and legends. Glastonbury Tor is an evocative landmark that stands majestically above the rolling countryside. You can walk to the top to the 15th century tower and survey a view that stretches for miles.
  • If you’ve brought your clubs along with you, Cricket St. Thomas Golf Club is not too far from Coombe St Nicholas. Just turn up on the day and you should be able to book a round of golf.
  • Salisbury is an important base for the army, but the navy also makes itself at home down here. The Naval Aviation Museum near Yeovil is a fascinating destination for all the family, with a museum showcasing Europe’s largest aviation collection of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.
