The Medieval Origins of Scargill Castle

Resembling a fortified manor house, Scargill Castle dates back to the 12th century. It was originally built by Warren de Scargill while overseeing works nearby for Henry II.

Archaeological discoveries reveal fragments of early earthworks from this period, offering insight into the castle’s defensive role and medieval significance.

When Channel 4's Time Team visited the site, presenter Tony Robinson and his team carried out detailed survey work and excavations. Their findings uncovered:

  • The remains of a surrounding barmkin (defensive medieval walls)

  • Evidence of domestic medieval life, including gaming dice

  • Structural features from multiple building phases

These discoveries helped piece together Scargill Castle's medieval origins and evolving role over the centuries.

A Tudor Transformation

The castle remained in the Scargill family until the 16th century. Around 1550, it was rebuilt as a Tudor dowager house for Mary Scargill.

The striking three-storey gatehouse design from this period still defines much of the castle’s character today. Architectural features from the Tudor era remain visible throughout the property, preserving its historic charm while adapting it for modern living.

Restoration and Time Team Excavation

After centuries of changing ownership and gradual decline, restoration work began in 2000 to return the castle to its former glory.

During renovations in 2008, Channel 4’s Time Team conducted further excavations on site, revealing more about the building’s layered history. Thanks to this careful restoration, Scargill Castle now maintains:

  • Ornate timber ceiling beams

  • A wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace

  • Historic stonework and original architectural detailing

  • A former courtyard now transformed into a charming private garden

The result is a beautifully preserved historic holiday cottage that blends Tudor character with contemporary comfort.
